(Right: The whole gang before we entered the Amazing Corn Maze!)I can't believe it's been a year since I had last been to the corn maze! The speed at which life goes by astounds me. Saturday found us back in the lovely little town of St. Jacobs. We stopped at the farmer's market first and had the world's BEST cinnamon bun! I seriously have never had one that was as good. Greg was smart and took two to go. I'm still kicking myself for not taking some to go too.
After the Farmer's market we went to the outlet mall and just browsed. The store we always end up spending a lot of time in is the Lego store. Everyone loves lego. I got just a small lego hockey game. I had fun putting that together last night.
Last year we had meant to go to Pickard's Peanuts which is a store that has zillions of peanuts in different flavours. It was great fun as you could taste the various flavours and decide which you liked best. I left with Salt and Vinegar peanuts, Unsalted Peanuts, Ketchup Peanuts and White Cheddar Chipnuts (potato covered peanuts). I also got a small bag of candy corn for old time's sake.
Then we were off to the Stone Crock the best home-cooked food in town. The buffet that night featured roast beef with gravy, scalloped potatos, a veggie filled pasta, sausage and sauerkraut along with soup and salad and the dessert buffet. The dessert buffet was filled with every type of pie you could imagine. To top it all off we had hot apple cidar to drink. Mmmmm. Highly recommend the place. Unfortunately they don't take reservations so we had to wait a bit before being seated but it was totally worth it!
With full tummies we headed out to the Ontario Maze for our 2006 adventure. The corn field had much taller stalks this year which made the maze much more fun to wander through. The maze is 45 acres and in the dark it's great fun to wander through!
Armed with our flashlights we entered the maze and immediately found ourselves separated into groups unintentionally. This was interesting because the year before it was pretty much impossible to get separated from everyone else because there were no alternative routes through. This year there were plenty of avenues that looked promising that ended up being dead ends. Many of us were fooled by this one route that looked promising and turned out to be the world's longest route to a dead end!
At the beginning of the maze there were a couple of little corn people that the owners had created. It was a little creepy to suddenly shine your light on that. As we got into the maze we didn't see anymore of them and I lamented to Lisa the fact that there were no funny corn people to take pictures of. She replied that they probably didn't want to scare anyone so they didn't put any further in the maze. At which point I shine my flashlight to the left and found Joe and Stu hiding amongst the corn stalks. Lisa and I both screamed before we had fully processed what we were looking at. Lisa totally ragged on the boys because she totally hates that stuff. I'm not big on that but I can brush it off a little more easily.
It was kinda funny after the fact because they didn't have to even say anything to scare us it was just that all of a sudden they were there! Kate and Anna tried to scare us to and received another tongue lashing as it had already been stated before we entered that jumping out of the stalks was forbidden by Lisa. I think it took us two hours to get out of the maze.
This year was much drier. Last year it poured on us and the wind whipped it all around. The other thing was that no one really came prepared and we got totally covered in mud. This year we were all prepared with boots and rain gear and luckily it stayed dry.
After getting out of the maze one of the owners gave us some marshmallows and had a fire going outside. So we sat around the fire roasting marshamallows and singing campfire songs. A few of our group opted to play the mini putt course that was alos there. I think we got back into Toronto around 1am.
On Sunday, I promised Frances I would help her carve pumpkins at her place in preparation for her big Halloween party on Saturday of this week. I arrived to find out that Voula and Jeremy were also there.
We had a fun afternoon carving our pumpkins and then had a great pizza dinner together. It was fantastic to see Voula and Jeremy again since I had not seen them since the wedding. Voula had her wedding photos with her so Frances and I got to see them. They had a really good photographer.
(Left: I carved a pumpkin for Frances on Sunday. Mine is the one on the left end.)After dinner Voula and Jeremy were kind enough to drop me off at the Subway so I didn't have to wait 40 minutes for the bus.
I found out that my Dad will be in town for three days as friends of him and my Mom lost their mother last week. He'll be here for the funeral. It will be nice to see him anyway. We're gonna have dinner together Wednesday and Thursday.
